The difficulty depends on the route you choose!

We hiked Trails 1-5-3, and the difficulty rating is ★★★★. The challenge lies in how exhausting it is!

The only log trail in Taiwan:

Dakeng Scenic Area, located in Beitun, Taichung, is often referred to as the “Back Garden of Taichung.” It’s a must-visit spot for nature lovers and hiking enthusiasts. Whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned hiker, you’ll find a trail that suits your level. The area has a forest recreation zone, hot springs, and a weekend market, but I think the coolest part is definitely the “log walkways.” Every step on these rounded wooden logs feels completely different from the rigid stone or concrete steps you’re used to. The slight springiness of the wood makes walking much easier on your knees, though you’ll need to watch your step and balance due to the uneven ground.

Visually, these log walkways are stunning. Each section of the steps and every railing has its own unique shape and grain, yet they blend seamlessly with the surrounding forest. I really admire the design and construction—these aren’t just trails, they’re on the level of “art pieces”!

The trails follow the natural terrain, and some sections are incredibly steep, almost vertical, with parts even suspended in midair. It’s a real challenge to hike, but for adventure lovers, it’s an absolute thrill! I had a blast, but by the end of it, my legs were so sore, shaking even more than after a tough gym session!

Trail No. 1, Learning the Log Walkway from a Gentle Slope:

1.6 kilometers long, passing by the Kids’ Forest Fitness Training Ground and several small parks along the way. When I first stepped onto the “log walkway,” I was a bit indifferent, thinking it might just be a gimmick. A friend mentioned that people online described Dakeng Scenic Area as the “Stairway to Heaven,” which made me laugh, thinking, “That’s such an exaggerated tagline.” Then, as we passed by a family, I heard a little girl wail, “My legs are going to die…” At that moment, I started paying a little more attention and thought to myself, “Is it really that tiring?”

Then, after climbing five or six steep slopes, I was faced with yet another large incline— a beautiful log walkway stretching endlessly upwards, disappearing into the dark green forest. By then, my legs were already starting to ache, and we hadn’t even reached halfway! That’s when I finally understood: the “stairway to heaven” isn’t just a metaphor—it’s real!

Trail No. 5, Panoramic Views of Taichung:

Reaching Trail 5 was an emotional moment. This 1.4 km trail connects Trails 1 through 4, following the ridgeline. While the route is a bit more gentle, don’t expect it to be too easy, haha! Fortunately, there’s a supply station here, offering reasonably priced snacks like braised tofu, water, and black tea. It’s such a considerate touch and gave us a much-needed energy boost to continue.

Parts of Trail 5 are still log walkways, and some sections are suspended. If you’re afraid of heights, just don’t look down—keep moving! When we finally arrived at the “Heisong Pavilion,” the view made all the effort worthwhile. I didn’t expect the scenery to be this stunning!

Trail No. 3, An Advanced Challenge for Endurance and Focus

As we descended, my friend and I both agreed that we were lucky not to have chosen Trail 3 for our ascent—it’s even steeper! Relentlessly so! This 1.3 km path pushed me to the point of feeling like my soul was leaving my body, and my legs no longer wanted to cooperate. It is said that Trails 2 and 4 are even harder, which I can’t even imagine. I’ll report back to you after I’ve conquered them!

Quick Fact: What’s the Difference Between a Walkway and a Trail? A walkway is an elevated structure, typically built to cross difficult or protected areas, while a trail refers to a path on the ground. So technically, Dakeng Scenic Area features “walkway structures!”

Dakeng Scenic Area has a total of 14 trails. The most challenging sections are Trails 2 and 4, but on the day we visited, these two hiking routes were still under maintenance due to the impact of a recent typhoon. So, we changed our plan and hiked up via Trail 1, followed the ridge along Trail 5, and descended using Trail 3. I believe that unless you’re a seasoned hiker, Trails 1 and 3 are already quite a challenge.

Of course, there are also easier routes, such as hiking up via Trail 9, descending via Trail 9-1, and then checking out the “Farmer’s Weekend Market!”

Overall~

These are considered the most challenging, with steep slopes and longer distances. Especially Trails 2 and 4, which are regarded as the toughest.

These are easier and more suitable for beginners. Trails 9 and 10 are known for their scenic views and easy access, making them popular choices for casual hikers and families.

This is a branch of Trail 5 that leads to Taichung’s highest point, “Touke Mountain,” and ends at Heisong Pavilion, with a total length of 1.6 km.

Transportation:

You can take the “66 Sub” bus from the MRT or TRA Songzhu Station to reach the “Dakeng Trail 1 Parking Lot.”
