Difficulty As I See It : ★★★

Hsinchu County
Approximately 5-6 hours

The Beidelaman Giant Tree Trail takes you deep into Taiwan’s pristine forest. The hike takes around 5 to 6 hours and can be completed in one day. This is a sacred place for the Atayal tribe, and you’ll walk among the tangled roots of Azalea trees. It’s home to the lowest-elevation grove of giant cypress trees in Taiwan, where you’ll encounter four massive trees over 500 years old along the way. You can take photos by the cliffside, and you’ll also see many oddly shaped boulders and towering cliffs. The scenery here is incredibly diverse.

However, there’s a lot of climbing involved, and walking through the tree roots is no easy feat. Make sure you’re well-prepared, well-rested, and have enough water and snacks! The entire trail is enveloped by lush forest, so if you’re like me and don’t enjoy being directly exposed to the sun, and if you love soaking in the tranquility of the woods while being ready for some “parkour” (I feel like I’m slow-motion parkouring, or you could call it “elderly parkour”), then welcome to Beidelaman!

Joining a Hiking Tour Takes All the Worry Away

Last week, I hiked the ancient trail on Yangmingshan and got lost. Not only that, but I brought a group of friends with me! It’s one thing to mess things up for myself, but I couldn’t let my friends get lost too, right? It scared me so much I was drenched in sweat. So, I decided not to wing it anymore and learn from the experts first. This time, I joined “Guo Guo Travel Photography.”

One-day itinerary:
06:30: Take the high-speed rail from Taipei, arriving at Hsinchu HSR station in 30 minutes.
07:10: Depart from Hsinchu HSR station to the Bei Delaman trailhead.
08:40: Arrive at the Bei Delaman trailhead.
09:00: Start the hike.
14:30: Return to the Bei Delaman trailhead.
17:00: Take the high-speed rail back to Taipei.

The feeling of entering the forest is simply amazing.
Every angle of Mr. Big Tree offers a different view.

Focus on the present moment (so I don’t trip)

I just love those roots

Take deep breaths (or else I’ll get out of breath)

巨木區的入口 entrance to the giant trees
Walking along the mountain ridge

Drink water mindfully (if I finish too quickly, I’m done for)

Photo hotspot
Another angle of Mr. Big Tree

Open up my senses and leave the little drama in my head behind.
(or I’ll run into spider webs, bump into tree trunks, trip over roots, or step on unstable rocks)

At this point, I can still manage to smile.

And then, during rest time, really rest seriously.
(If I have 5 minutes to sit, I’d sit properly, because I might have to hike for another hour after)

Rock Monster
Hi, I am tourist.

Learn to accept things joyfully
(If it rains hard, I still have to keep going—what’s the point of throwing a tantrum?)

nasty
nasty 2.0

Lastly, practice “slowly completing something step by step” It’s all about taking one step at a time; there are no shortcuts, no secret tricks. If you’re impatient, you can just stroll through the local park, but if you want to see a broader view, you need to be patient and keep walking, one step after another.

It’s been a long time since I focused this much
concentrating on making sure every step is steady.

Imperfection is what makes things interesting.

Otherwise, how would we have funny stories to share with others?)

Other people’s cliffs:

My cliff:(?)

Mine looks like a photo with the background removed. Haha. Although the thick fog made it impossible to capture good landscape photos, the hike was cool and refreshing, and I really enjoyed it!

真正的森林都在這裡 this is where you’ll find the real wilderness.

Mid-range mountains in Taiwan are not necessarily easy. These mountains, located at an altitude of 1,000 to 3,000 meters, showcase the island’s most dramatic topographical changes. Compared to Taiwan’s higher peaks above 3,000 meters, like those in the Baiyue series, mid-range mountains feature steeper valleys and rugged terrain with lush temperate forests. While high mountains tend to have alpine grasslands due to the cold climate, mid-range mountains preserve Taiwan’s untouched wilderness, filled with magnificent forest ecosystems, making them perfect for exploring the wild.
